‘Dust’ Exhibition, Whitechapel Gallery, London June 30th 2017
This is an exhibition of photographs curated by David Campany. The theoretical framework for the exhibition is a photo by Man Ray of a glass with dust on it provided by Marcel Duchamp. The image looks like an Ariel view of a landscape – something ‘other.’ The central motif is ‘dust’ and not necessarily the other. I liked the photographs by Walker Evans of ruin and decay and the the animated Dust storm by John Gerrard which is about anticipation of destruction.
My feeling about the show was that it was emotionally flat, perhaps because of the monochromatic nature of Dust and decay, but perhaps that was the intention.
